We all want our children to be grateful. Are certain gifts better than others? According to the Wall Street Journal, children who value relationships and nature over things have higher grades and an overall sense of well being. In fact those who viewed consumption as a main indicator of success were more likely to be depressed and suffer from lower grades.
A mom blogger wanted to help her kids learn about gratitude through food and play. She mentions that a reason why kids are not grateful today is that they are not a part of the meal process. We are so grateful that our MONTESSORI program includes children setting their table and cleaning up and at the same time creating relationships over lunch.
In one of his talks about environmental stewardship Pope Francis emphasized that having an appreciation for life can start simply with the food one prepares and eats. Additionally gratitude comes from giving thanks each day – singing “Thank you Lord for giving us….” during chapel starts the day in the best mindset. And now from research this infused gratitude also means better success in school.
So while you are taking extra time at dinner to include your kids in the meal making and table setting process and taking a moment to thank God for simple blessings – know that besides feeding their bodies, you are feeding their minds and souls too!
